Does it really work?
A 17-year-old girl had been vomiting after meals for several months. She had undergone a thorough examination that found no underlying medical problem. Her psychologist learned that the vomiting episodes had begun after having an accident while driving her mother's car without permission.
In working with the girl, the psychologist learned that her mother initially had been extremely angry over the incident, which had upset the girl. But upon learning of her daughter's vomiting, the anger had turned to concern. As part of the girl's treatment, the psychologist hypnotized her and suggested that she wasn't a bad person, that her mom was being understanding, and that perhaps the vomiting was becoming tiresome. He knew that the girl loved fast food. So while she was hypnotized, he said he was going to tell her mother to drive by her favorite restaurant on the way home and she was to imagine stopping to eat.
The next day the mother called to say that her daughter had asked to stop and eat at two fast-food restaurants on their way home. The mother also reported there had been no vomiting.
This story isn't as dramatic a use of hypnosis as making someone bark like a dog, which used to be a standard part of a hypnotist's stage act. But it does demonstrate the potential value of hypnosis in a clinical setting.
What hypnosis is not
As Friedrich explains, hypnosis has little in common with the mind control exhibited by stage hypnotists. "A hypnotist can't make a person do something that's against his or her will. The person who walks around like a chicken has either been planted in the audience or wants the attention and is responding to a kind of peer pressure from the crowd. Stage hypnotists are very good at spotting people who want such attention."
Focus, not hocus pocus
Rather than the dreamy, zombie-like state of popular imagination, hypnosis is basically a technique that enhances relaxation and focus. In fact, Friedrich defines hypnosis as a state of relaxation combined with a narrowed focus and heightened suggestibility.
You might be getting sleepy
A trance can be induced directly by having a person stare fixedly at a spot, a dot, or, yes, even a watch. Indirect methods include making suggestions and using imagery for example, asking a person to imagine a very specific place in great detail.
Friedrich often helps people learn to hypnotize themselves. For example, a former drug addict with severe pain (due to a tumor) didn't want to use pain-killing medication because he feared becoming addicted. Friedrich helped him learn to imagine that he had a "control knob" in his mind.
"When I told him to turn up the pain with this control, he winced. Then I told him to turn down the pain and notice that it was now pressure instead of sharp pain. He was able to re-label the pain and feel it differently. He used the technique quite successfully, comfortably handling pain that would usually require a narcotic."
The future
Hypnosis will continue to be used as a tool in such areas as managing chronic pain, treating addictions and overcoming anxieties. It also may have a role as a substitute for traditional anesthesia during some surgical procedures and in dentistry.
