If a tick bite hurts, is it a sign of disease?

Not necessarily. Tick and other bites can hurt simply because you've been bitten. However, continued pain and swelling could mean a localized infection. If you do have redness, pain or swelling that doesn't resolve quickly, or if you experience any other symptoms, you should seek medical attention.

There are many types of ticks and many of them are fairly harmless. Some, however, may carry a variety of diseases Lyme disease is carried by the deer tick, which lives in moist, forest-like areas such as Lyme, Conn.

Infections may occur with what we call a target rash -- a red center surrounded by a white area which is surrounded by a red circle. Often these rashes go unnoticed and we don't test for Lyme disease until the person develops muscle aches, joint pain or other symptoms weeks to months after the tick bite. In bad cases, Lyme disease affects the heart and nervous system. The bottom line: Although there's no cause for alarm, bites, cuts and scrapes that don't heal on their own should be checked by an expert.
